Donate Now: Changes For The Old Railroad Bridge in Sheffield

SHEFFIELD, Ala. (WHNT) – Many residents in the Shoals walk the Old Railroad Bridge in Sheffield. Some residents go to exercise and others go to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

James Bedsole believes the bridge plays an important part to the Shoals. His belief motivated him to join the Old Railroad Bridge Organization, the group that owns the bridge. Its goal is to preserve it and keep the bridge safe.

“This bridge is a family oriented place. People walk on it all the time or they ride their bikes. We have the Fourth of July fireworks off the bridge,” said Bedsole.

The organization said one way it will keep the bridge safe is by installing lights.

“We are trying to do this now because the recent activities that have happened on the bridge. Someone got thrown off the bridge into the river. It bought attention to the fact that lighting is needed at night-time to allow the police to identify anything that is going on,” said Bedsole.

The organization said it would install surveillance cameras in the future. Lights will be installed 60 feet apart from each other. The lighting project is estimated to take at least three months and cost about $15,000.
